Teaching
I tutor first year biochemists in physical biochemistry; this introduces key aspects of quantum mechanics, spectroscopy, kinetics, and classical thermodynamics. I have also demonstrated in second and third year practical laboratories, and have supervised two final year MChem students in their projects.
Occasionally I write simple notes on some of the subjects covered in these courses, which I distribute here. I am always keen to hear about how these can be improved, corrected, or made clearer, and would be delighted to hear from anyone who wishes to contribute.
Teaching Notes
- A simple derivation of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle This avoids any difficult mathematical concepts, and as a result is not overly thorough, but hopefully illustrates how it arises.
- An explanation of the particle in a box and particle on a ring model. This explanation relies only on A-Level mathematics, and should hopefully be accessible to those who are not overly keen on maths.
